How To Dress Like You're In A Jane Austen Novel

Fashion has many sources of inspiration; style even more so. Be it a decade, a film, a movement—adopting the look of another can have a comforting solidarity. While a good story will have you immersed enough with its words, I like a method approach, and nothing gets me more into a story than appearing as though I might at any second jump into its pages (liberties taken wherever they must). I call it the pursuit of literary aesthetic coordination.

This series may follow current reads, or it may feature old favorites. Come Winter, Olivia and I will probably tell you all about the times we've dressed like heroines in an Evelyn Waugh novel, but for this first edition of How To Dress Like Your Novel, I thought I'd celebrate Jane Austen, and my personal favorite, Emma.

The Regency Era's not a difficult one; think maxi dresses with empire waists... light neutrals for ill-advised picnics... comfortable flats for wandering the countryside... Jane Austen would either love or hate me but either way she'd say it wittily.
