The surrealists think that passion is important, that nightmares are important. But they don’t value simplicity, which is how I think of love. This patient, tense, and quiet thing that is leaving someone alone.
— Courtney Maum, Costalegre

At The Attic on Eighth, we live for comforting, escapist reads. If you’re up to date on our posts this season you’ll notice a lot of our summer has been about traveling through literature or memory, leaving without moving an inch. Set in a different place or time, a good summer read has to fully immerse us in its story, and make us love its characters so that, much like a good holiday, we never want to leave.

Out today, Courtney Maum’s latest novel Costalegre delivers our summery, escapist dreams perfectly. Set at a fictional Mexican artist’s retreat in 1937, Costalegre follows Lara, a young girl on the precipice of life, grappling with a world on the precipice of war. Inspired by the art collector Peggy Guggenheim and her own daughter Pegeen, Maum’s novel follows Lara’s relationship with her mother and the group of artists they live with in this rich, secluded place. (You can read more about in Raquel’s review here.)
